Types Of Advertising Jobs
If you are a creative individual who enjoys brainstorming fresh ideas, a career in the exciting world of advertising might be ideal for you. There are many different types of advertising jobs available that you can consider. All but clerical and entry level are going to require some sort of related college education. In many cases when you are in school studying for your career, you will get an internship at an advertising agency. Usually, internships are unpaid but they do give you real world experience in your chosen field and exposure to companies you may want to work for in the future.
There are advertising careers that you might not even be aware of. The first thing that many people think of when they think of advertising is coming up with commercials, radio ads, print ad ideas and other types of advertisements for clients. These ads involve writing copy, often dreaming up stories and images, even working with color in such a way to entice the potential customer. There is no one person who takes care of an entire ad campaign for a client. Even a single commercial requires a whole team of professionals working together towards the end goal.
If you want to be part of the team who comes up with the ideas, then you want to join the creative department. In this department you job might be to create storyboards, come up with ad concepts, brainstorm taglines or write copy. Another department in every ad agency is account management. These professionals deal directly with the client and are the liason between the client and the creative department. Then there is the production department, who takes the finished product from the creative department and makes it a reality, whether this means getting a commercial on television or a print ad in a magazine, for example.
When you decide that a career in advertising is what you want to do, consult with a school advisor who can tell you more about advertising jobs and what you need to study to be qualified for the job you want. It is important to take the right classes and choose the right major to ensure you are ready to enter the workforce after college. During your schooling, you may even create a portfolio based on assignments that you can show to potential employers so they can get an idea of your skills. Although you might start at the bottom, if you work hard and showcase your best skills you can eventually work your way up to a higher position at the agency.
